Ash Hill Experience and Local Interests

This year, Ash Hill experienced its 6th year of nesting Barn Owls. Guests who stayed with us were able to view the owls from a discreet location within the house, so as not to disturb them. Owls owls can be seen between 10 - dawn..

The Barn Owl is the most threatened species of owl in Ireland and has recently been 'Red-listed' in the 'Birds of Conservation Concern in Ireland'. They are generally seen only at dusk or at night when they hunt a variety of small mammals such as Field Mice, House Mice,Bank Voles and Brown Rats. A nationwide census needs to be carried out to accurately determine the true population of Barn Owls in Ireland, but it has been estimated at between 400 - 800 pairs.

The huge ears of this bat are its most distinctive feature – they are almost as long as the body. Although they are probably quite common in Ireland, it is difficult to see long-eared bats in flight because they prefer to forage in woodland flying amongst the foliage, picking moths and other insects off leaves.
